How a third-placed Scotland actually qualifies
- 48 teams, 12 groups of four. The top two from each group go through automatically โ 24 places.
- The best 8 of the 12 third-placed teams also go through, making 32 in the knockout round.
- Third-place teams ranked by: points โ goal difference โ goals scored โ fair-play โ draw of lots.
- So every goal Scotland concede against Brazil and every goal other third-placed sides score in their final group game matters.
- The catch: Scotland play their final game early. By Sunday morning we'll know if they're in.
